Directions:
To Start from Galvin Middle School in Wakefield [Southern End]; From I-95 take exit 58 to Route 129 south for 1.6 miles to Water St. Continue straight on Main St another 0.2 miles to Galvin Middle School on your right. The trail begins across the street.
The Wakefield-Lynnfield Rail Trail will follow the rail bed of the former Newburyport RR. The Newburyport RR (later known as the Newburyport Branch of the Boston & Maine Railroad) was a railroad that came about from the merger of three small rail companies into one rail line to compete with the Eastern Railroad for service between Newburyport and Boston. The Newburyport Railroad ran from Newburyport to Wakefield, where it connected with the Boston and Maine RR for service into Boston. Beginning from Galvin Middle School in Wakefield, the Wakefield-Lynnfield Rail Trail travels North, through Lynnfield to the Peabody border. Starting from Main Street in Wakefield [Southern End]; The paved Wakefield-Lynnfield Rail Trail begins across the street from Galvin Middle School and heads North, crossing Richardson St following a partially shaded corridor through Wakefield. Pass by an old RR Station before crossing Water St, followed by New Salem St at 0.4 miles. A causeway takes you through the Mill River floodplain before the trail ends at Salem St after 0.9 miles.
Note; In Lynnfield, Phase 1 construction is expected to begin in 2026 and will run from Nichols Lane in Peabody, South, to Ford Ave. Phase 2 will complete the trail between Wakefield & Lynnfield.
