Length: Big Flats Trail; 1.7 miles.

Difficulty: Easy. Flat stone-dust rail trail.
Directions:
To Start from the South Hibbard Road parking lot [Western End]; From I-86/Route 17 take exit 49 to Bridge St and head south. Turn left on Maple St and follow 0.7 miles to a parking lot on your right after a sharp corner.
To start from Sperr Memorial Park [Center Section]; From I-86/Route 17 take exit 50 to Kahler Rd and travel south. The park will be on your right.
The Big Flats Trail follows the rail bed (East-West) of the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western RR or perhaps a siding off this RR.
Starting from the South Hibbard Road parking lot [Western End]; Head up to the rail bed and travel East along the stone-dust Big Flats Trail crossing an iron bridge over Cuthrie Run. This open trail travels along a berm and causeway through a marsh. Just past a path on your left you'll come to another path that leads up to Sperr Memorial Park parking lot at 0.9 miles.
Note; Head left, North, for the Sperr Memorial Park Loop. Here you'll find a picnic pavilion, gazebo, play ground and Porto-Potty. A gravel trail Loops you around Lowe Pond, past many small gardens, bird houses and benches. Very scenic and whimsical. A causeway takes you between the pond and a marsh. Return to the Big Flats Trail and head left, East, past some picnic tables to complete the 0.6 mile Loop.
Continuing East a short climb takes you up and over Kahler Rd where you now travel through a below grade cut. The trail ends after 1.7 miles.
Note; A study is underway in 2024, to create the Chemung River Greenway, which will travel 20 miles from the Corning Riverfront Trail in Corning, East, connecting to the Big Flats Trail in Big Flats. It will then continue East to the Lackawanna Rail Trail in Elmira.
